What is a Website Title Tag?

A website title tag is defined as an “HTML element” that specifies the title of a webpage. Since search engines use title tags to determine the relevancy of the website in regards to search queries, the website title tag also functions as an accurate, concise description of the page’s content.

Where Can I Find the Title Tag?

In the HTML code, the title tag is sandwiched between these two handles:

In a search engine results page (SERP), the title tag is the clickable headline you see for each given result. On the Google SERP, the title tag is the big, blue hyperlink that you can click on. The website’s actual URL is the smaller, green-colored text beneath that.

On a webpage, it will depend on the coding, layout, and design of the page. But, more often than not, the title tag is the page’s headline or header—if not a part of it.

How Long Should a Title Tag be?

Most internet marketing experts agree that the optimal length of a website title tag should be under 60 characters. Anything longer than that, and the title gets cut off into ellipses on the SERP. Your webpage’s intention won’t be very clear if that happens.

So a title like: “The Top 10 Best Things You Can Do For Your SEO Marketing, According To An Industry Expert” is fine. However, it’s 73 characters long. On Google’s SERP, it would probably be displayed as “The Top 10 Best Things You Can Do For Your SEO Marketing, According…

Not very forthcoming.

A better take on the title would be “An Industry Expert’s Top 10 Tips for SEO Marketing.” It says exactly the same thing as the original title. The only difference is that it’s well under 60 characters and therefore doesn’t risk getting cut off.

Why is a Website Title Important for SEO?

Here’s where it gets interesting.

As mentioned earlier, the website title tag is the clickable headline of a given result. It also acts as a succinct, accurate description (or summary) of a webpage’s content. Basically, the search engine algorithm takes the website title at face value.

If the website title says there are 10 SEO marketing tips on that webpage, Google—and the users—are going to expect ten tips.

Not five. Not eight. Ten.

If you want to optimize your website for search engines—and consequently draw more organic traffic, followers, subscribers, and eventually sales—then a website title needs to be part of the equation. And it needs to be planned out and well-written. You need to make sure it’s short, sweet, and succinct in order for your page to be included in relevant searches.

Which are you more likely to click on: “8 Celebrity Secrets to Clear, Healthy Skin” or “OrganicSkin.com”?

The former is an example of a skincare page with a proper website title, and the latter is a website in the same category, only without the title.

Consider this: your website title is your website’s display title on the SERP. It’s basically any visitor’s first impression of your site, and therefore plays a huge role in helping someone decide if they want to visit your sit or not.

The quality of your content doesn’t matter if the website title—or lack thereof—is discouraging people from clicking on your page. This means your SEO marketing efforts will be for naught. You need to take the time to craft and create on a catchy, well-phrased title that can rake in clicks like crazy.
